We believe a trend has developed where the project engineer or architect commissions a limited geotechnical investigation only. That investigation may outline some preliminary design parameters, state that it is a problem site or just recommend that further investigations be undertaken. It may be useful to the extent that it identifies that piling is required. It may also classify the site and recommend further testing is required to determine the piling design parameters.

We often see this type of report at tender stage.

Some engineers are conducting the preliminary investigations and are recommending further investigations are required and putting the responsibility of conducting these onto the builder or piling contractor.

That is fine and we can assist with recommending investigation parameters for further geotechnical investigations so appropriate design parameters can be determined and probable pile founding depths estimated and consequently piling costs likely to be required.

Recommendations

However I recommend that you allow a provisional sum for the piling works and associated geotechnical reports required.

Often we are asked by builders to quote for a specific pile length for costing purposes. This practice although helpful does not assist the builder to readily quantify the probable cost for the client. It is impossible to accurately quantify the possible piling and foundation costs with only a limited geotechnical investigation. We can estimate or guess at the potential founding depth. We can also draw on local experience. But ultimately it is an educated guess.

There seems to be a trend of builders accepting the commercial risk of the unknown latent geotechnical conditions. Even with a comprehensive geotechnical report, testing is only a few randomly selected boreholes and probes. These may not always typically reflect the real conditions over the entire site. Unless testing is done at every pile position it is impossible to accurately quantify the full extent of the piling required.

Pile depth can vary across a site

I have for a long time now highly recommended that the builder does not enter into a building contract that includes the piling works at a fixed price. The potential risk is enormous.

Mother earth can be extremely variable

A recent example which highlights this is as follows. The site had a geotechnical investigation that can only be described as preliminary with 2 boreholes to 4.0 m deep and one to 8.0 m deep and all conducted along the rear of the site. Further investigations were commissioned by the builder. They identified that the piling may extend to 12.5m deep at places.

During the piling of the site there was a very unusual situation where the piling depths suddenly dropped from 6 to 7m deep into a very deep hole at over 22 to 24m deep and even deeper in places. We have never experienced anything like this in the 15 years I have been piling.

This is a very unusual situation, but illustrates the potential risk.

Do not accept the risk

As a piling contractor I will not enter into a fixed price contract as it is impossible to know exactly what is under the ground. As a builder you should not accept that risk either.

We can build our tag trailers with any coupling required. The options are as follows:

Range of Trailer Couplings

Each coupling has different ratings for how much load it can carry; more information can be found here. The Bartlett or 8 ball and Ringfeder can carry the least, the pintle hook more and the flying saucer the most.

Flying Saucer Connected

The flying saucer with its 12 tonne vertical load capacity is by far the best value for load distribution to the truck. This is the standard coupling we utilise with our trailer unless another type is requested.

Attaching Truck and Trailer

The pintle hook and flying saucer are very similar to connect, the critical thing being the height of the trailer coupling in comparison to the truck hitch. This applies to the Bartlett ball, the pintle hook and the flying saucer. The coupling procedure requires that you check the height before engaging the coupling for all the couplings. Air hoses, lights and power connections all need to be done regardless of coupling type.

Most people can connect a flying saucer coupling up just as quickly as a Bartlett ball. Attaching a flying saucer coupling does require a spanner (which we supply); the other coupling types do not require tools.

Flying saucer attached to truck with Ringfeder option

Altering Truck couplings

Russell Heale Engineering often alters the truck coupling to fit the trailer sold.

Flying saucer attached to truck with pintle hook option

The latest truck modification was to enable a truck to use either a Flying Saucer coupling (our standard trailer coupling) or a Ringfeder coupling. This allows the truck to pull trailers with either form of coupling.

Other Dual Coupling Options

A ready made dual coupling hitch can also be sourced. There is a truck coupling manufacturer making these dual truck hitches allowing more than one coupling type to be fitted to a single vehicle. The options are Bartlett ball and Ringfeder, or Ringfeder and a heavy duty pintle hook. We can forward more information about this on request.

We offer several sizes of powerhead to suit different applications from 70,000NM to 300,000NM, with some sizes available ex-stock.

Q: How did Russell Heale Engineering start manufacturing Powerheads?

Following extensive experience rebuilding powerheads manufactured by others we embarked on setting up our own manufacturing facility, building quality robust powerheads specifically designed for the screw piling industry. This has enabled us to design out the weaknesses, we are the only specialist powerhead manufacturer for the piling industry.

Q: Why choose a Powerhead made by Russell Heale Engineering?

The powerheads that we build are unique in their internal design. They are designed for screw piling and the duty cycle demands that come with this type of work. They can also be used for augering applications.

Experience has shown that there are enormous levels of heat generated by the gearbox during the continuous use experienced when installing screw piles. To overcome this heat we install a thermostatically controlled oil cooler to the powerhead hood.

We have had powerheads working in the field since we started making them two years ago without any problems.

Q: What speeds can I expect from the powerheads available?

Speeds may vary depending on machine size and pump capacity.

Typical Start up Speeds

Each powerhead has a different start up speed and those provided below are based on typical speeds for a 25-30 tonne excavator.

100,000Nm powerheads have approximately 40 rpm at start up which is a very good speed for augering and getting piles down through the softer materials very quickly.

150,000Nm powerheads have a slower speed of approximately 30 rpm.

300,000Nm powerheads have approximately 15 rpm. The alternative to a 300,000Nm powerhead is to use a combination of a 100,000Nm or 150,000Nm powerhead and a 300,000Nm multiplier, which would enable faster output speeds. To find out more about our multipliers click here.

Q: How do I get further information?

If you would like information about likely output speeds for a specific machine please contact us and we can obtain the relevant hydraulic flow charts and advise the likely output speeds.

If you would like to discuss these options please call our office on 07 5593 7755.
